Road derestriction signs

Traffic signs or road signs are signs that are erected at the side of roads to provide information to road users. With increasing speed of transport, the tendency is for countries to adopt pictorial signs or otherwise simplify and standardize signs, to facilitate international travel where language differences can create barriers and in general to reduce the risks one faces in driving. Such pictorial signs use symbols in place of words and are usually a result of international collaboration. Such signs were first developed in Europe, but have been adopted by most other countries to varying degrees. Where there has been a restriction put upon traffic and the restriction zone comes to an end, it is common to depict this by placing road derestriction signs at the side of the road. A good example of this is at the end of a highway, where you will see a sign depicting the highway with a red cross through it. You may also see road derestriction signs at the end of an area that has been restricted to certain types of traffic.
One of the road derestriction signs that you will not see in South Africa but that is always used in the UK is the sign depicting the end of a speed restriction. This is one area where the government could learn from overseas. Where, for example, traffic has been limited to 30mph, when the restriction ends there is always a circular white sign with a black diagonal across it, indicating the end of the speed limit zone. South Africa would benefit from using these particular road derestriction signs since, at present, one does not know when a speed limit zone ends.
