Road control signs

Over the years there has been a gradual change in road control signs, in their make up, their design and their size, in order to keep up with the ever changing traffic conditions. Today, signs are almost all metal, rather than wood, and many are coated with a retro-reflective surface of various types so that they may be more easily be seen at night-time and in low-light visibility. In some countries we are now starting to see new generations of road control signs based on big electronic displays that can also their symbols and provide intelligent behaviour by means of sensors in or at the side of the road or by remote control. These "road beacon systems" are based on the use of RFID transponders buried in the asphalt to allow for on-board signalling and interaction between the car and the road.
Yet another "medium" for transferring information ordinarily associated with visible road control signs is RIAS (Remote Infrared Audible Signage), e.g., "talking signs" for print-handicapped (including blind/low-vision/illiterate) people. These are infra-red transmitters serve the same purpose as the usual graphic signs when received by an appropriate device such as a hand-held receiver or one built into a cell phone. As technology advances we will continue to see fresh innovations in road control signs – already car manufacturers are experimenting with ‘driverless’ vehicles, and these could well be the normal method of transportation in a couple of centuries from now.
