In most countries of the world the stop sign is octagonal. It can be coloured red with white trim or yellow with black trim, but it is always octagonal. This shape came about in order to make the meaning of the sign recognizable, even and especially in cases where heavy drifting snow has completely covered any writing on the sign. The unique eight-sided shape of the sign also allows drivers facing the back of the sign to identify that oncoming drivers have a stop sign and prevent confusion with other traffic signs. The first known stop signs supplier was in Michigan in 1915, and the first ones had black letters on a white background and were 24×24 inches, somewhat smaller than the current sign. Laws and regulations regarding how drivers must comply with a stop sign vary from country to country. Likewise today’s stop signs suppliers must be compliant with rules and regulations regarding the makeup, design and colour of such signage in their region.
