A great many people, not just in South Africa, take road signs for granted, assuming that there is always a supplier just around the corner. But road signs are a little more important than that, and to become established as the number one road signs supplier in any country is an important asset for a company. Ever since civilizations started building roads between important centres there was a call for some kind of signage to tell people how to get to such centres. There are still reminders of such ancient signage in some of the milestones giving the distance to Rome and erected by the Romans some two thousand years ago. In the Middle Ages, multidirectional signs at intersections became common, giving directions to cities and towns. Some of these early fingerposts, as they were called, can still be seen at road junctions in various parts of Europe.

Today road signs suppliers have to keep on their toes. It is no longer satisfactory to just make any old sign. Colours, shapes and sizes have been agreed upon by different nations and are laid down in the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals, part of the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic treaty. This treaty was drawn up and signed by participating nations with the aim of standardizing road traffic regulations in participating countries in order to facilitate international road traffic and to increase road safety. Road signs suppliers have to be completely conversant with the terms of this treaty, particularly those parts describing how road signs should be portrayed. There are samples of signage used in Southern African countries under the ‘Products’ tab on this website.
