Road safety signage
Road safety signage is comprised of traffic signs that have been erected at the side of roads in order to provide useful information to road users that will enhance their safety. With the ever increasing speed of transport since the invention of the motor car at the turn of the last century, the tendency is for countries to adopt pictorial road safety signage or to otherwise modify and standardise it, in order to make international travel easy where language differences can otherwise create fences and in general to reduce the risks in driving. Such pictorial road safety signage uses symbols or pictographs in place of words and is usually the result of international co-operation. Such signage was first developed in Europe and complies with the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic Treaty, which was ratified by many countries in 1968, and has been adopted by most countries to varying degrees since then.
