Road Signage Products

A few months ago I visited Cape Town for the first time in many years – I had never driven in that city before and what happened? I got lost! I got lost for one reason – the road direction signs on the particular road I was on were very ambiguous. In the end I navigated by using different landmarks and the sun, and ended up where I needed to be, but how much easier it would have been if more appropriate and better road signage products had been in use. Armco Signage is a major manufacturer and distributor of road signage products in southern Africa and is based in Robertville, Johannesburg. They have a comprehensive range of their traffic signs displayed on their website under the products tab.
Although road signage products may vary a little from one country to another, they are generally all laid down by the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals, which came into being in 1968. The convention divides road signage products into seven categories:
- Danger warning signs
- Priority signs
- Prohibitory or restrictive signs
- Mandatory signs
- Special regulation signs
- Information, facilities, or service signs
- Direction, position, or indication signs
It also lays down the shape, colour and size that should be adhered to in the manufacture of road signs. The names given to the seven categories may differ from country to country, but generally speaking the convention is recognized throughout the world.
