Information Signs are any road traffic signs used first and foremost to give information about the location of either the driver and his vehicle or any of his possible destinations. Plutarch wrote about information Signs in the shape of milestones being used in the 3rd century BC, while some fingerposts in the United Kingdom date back to the late 17th Century. With the development of the turnpike, the earliest form of toll road, and the stagecoach, the Turnpike Roads Act 1773 was passed, making signposting compulsory so that riders could judge their speed and prevent themselves from becoming lost. Only when the motorcar came along at the beginning of the 20th century did modern information signs came into being, with less words and a much clearer design, allowing them to be read at speed.

There are three different colour schemes on information signs in this country. Signs referring to a highway are blue with a white text, and to all other roads are green with a white text. You may sometimes see the two signs together, either one above the other or alongside each other. The third common colour combination is white lettering and graphic on a brown background – these signs are all used for tourist information. Municipalities sometimes use their own information signs, which may be white with back lettering. Armaco Signage produces a wide and comprehensive range of traffic signs of all types, and you ca see examples on our website under the products tab.
