Traffic signs or road signs are signs erected at the side of roads to provide information to road users. With the increasing speed of transport, there has been a tendency for countries to adopt pictorial signs or otherwise simplify and standardize signs, to facilitate international travel where language differences can create barriers and in general to reduce the risks in driving. Such pictorial signs use symbols in place of words and are usually a result of international standards. Such signs were first developed in Europe, and have been adopted by most countries to varying degrees. Some of the road signs we see are known as selective road restriction signs. However, when the restriction on a stretch of road comes to an end the road user must be informed, and this is done by using road de-restriction signs, which are usually the restriction sign struck through with a large red cross. These signs are used to depict the end of a restricted zone, and so road de-restriction signs can be seen at the end of a highway as a blue rectangle depicting a highway, but with a large red cross through it.
